Everyone knows termites are a major residential pest control problem, with their habit of ingesting wood and undermining the structural integrity of homes, causing costly damage. But for one family, the destruction wrought by these Seattle pest control offenders was much worse than usual.
Fire struck a home near the Seattle suburb of Lynnwood on Sunday, engulfing the south side of the house and spreading into the attic before firefighters were able to get it under control. When the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire, they traced the cause to a termite-infested woodpile on the side of the home.
In a bizarre twist of fate, the sawdust created by the termites had generated enough heat during decomposition that it spontaneously combusted, igniting the house. Although the family and their pets were able to escape, the fire ultimately caused $200,000 worth of damage to the home.
Although such occurrences are rare, they demonstrate the importance of promptly addressing residential pest control issues before they get out of hand. A Seattle pest control company could have cleared out the termite infestation and prevented irreversible damage to the family’s property for a fraction of the amount it will cost to repair the home.
Residents who are concerned about termites can prevent such disasters by contacting a Seattle pest control firm for a home pest inspection.
