It’s Gardening Season: Now is the Time to Plant a Mosquito Repellent Garden

herb garden on balconyThis year’s unusually warm spring weather is perfect for getting out in your garden to beautify it and practice mosquito pest control. With the West Nile virus already reaching the Pacific Northwest, natural pest control is as simple as planting herbs and flowers that mosquitoes hate. If you don’t have a large garden space, don’t worry—mosquito-repelling plants are great in container gardens.

Plants for Washington and Oregon Mosquito Control

  • Basil: Use it in herb and container gardens.
  • Catnip, or catmint: Plant in areas that you mind don’t mind cats rolling around in.
  • Citronella: Use it as a decorative grass in your yard or in containers.
  • Garlic: Add it to your flowerbed or vegetable garden.
  • Geranium: Use the scented cascading flowers in a hanging basket.
  • Lavender: Grow it near windows, in flowerbeds or anywhere you want to add height in a garden or container.
  • Lemon balm, or horsemint and beebalm: Grow it in containers (it grows aggressively).
  • Marigolds: Plant them around the perimeter of your home, in flowerbeds or areas where you want to repel mosquitoes.
  • Pennyroyal: Use it as a ground cover or in a hanging basket.
  • Peppermint: Plant it around your home or as filler in a container.
  • Rosemary: Plant it in an herb garden or container, or burn it in a fire pit or grill.
  • Sage: Use it in herb or container gardens, or burn it in a fire pit or grill.
  • Eliminate sources of standing water, such as clogged gutters, pooled water in tarps or tires, or ponds without pumps.
